Regulations for Hotel Fire Safety

Staying in NYC is typically on the average person’s bucket list. There’s nothing like experiencing the Big Apple up close and personal, live and in person. The hotel industry in our city is booming, and there are stringent regulations that hotel owners need to follow in order to see that all of their guests and employees are safe. An accidental fire inside a hotel is considered a worst-case scenario for everyone, but thankfully, many mandates are in place to see that hotel property is significantly protected from a disastrous fire.

In order for a hotel to receive the proper permits to be open for business, it needs to comply with regulations put forth by the FDNY. Among the list of things that must be done is flameproofing. This is when decorative materials and objects are coated with or soaked in flame repellent chemicals.  Such items include (but aren’t limited to) carpets, curtains, drapes, upholstered furniture, decorative items, and holiday décor. Should a fire break out in the building, these treated items will not be combustible nor will they contribute to the spread and severity of a fire. The treated items still will burn, but they won’t add fuel to the fire, so to speak.

A hotel owner can also elect to buy items and materials that are already inherently flame resistant.

Another regulation that hotel owners must be compliant with is having smoke detectors installed in every guest bedroom. Should a fire break out in the building, all the rooms will be notified and advised to leave the premises. Another way guest bedrooms are kept safe from fire is through firewalls. Each bedroom is separated with fireproof sheetrock, which prevents a fire from spreading room to room and setting the entire building ablaze. Other fire safety measures in place in hotels are automatic fire sprinklers, clearly marked exits, and a sufficient number of emergency exits.
